In November 2016 a large and deadly fire burned through a swath of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and nearby resort towns. Fourteen people were killed in the blaze. By the time the fires were under control, they had burned through around 10,000 acres in the park and the surrounding area — including destroying buildings in and around the towns of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. The 2016 Great Smoky Mountain fires were the deadliest in the Eastern U.S. since 1947.
